Yes, you can receive subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans together. Generally, if you qualify for subsidized loans, you take the maximum you can in those first and then borrow from unsubsidized loans. Subsidized loans have a lower maximum each year. For example, the maximum and independent freshman can borrow is $9,500/year; however, only $3,500 of that can be in subsidized loans. You never need a cosigner for federal stafford loans.
