Cat kneeds the bed and water dish?

my cat kneeds her bed,the furnace vents, the stone fireplace wall, and in front of her water/food dishes? why does she do that? her mommy does some of this too. why do they do that? both our cats do that. they are brother and sister. do your cats do that? thanks for helping:>
